The Apero Mekunu Movement has taken a bold step in calling for the inclusiveness of People Living with Disabilities in governance, as they believe that no one should be left behind in Governance due to their physical condition.
The group and concerned stakeholders held a meeting in Ibadan on Sunday said that this this call for inclusiveness became imperative in order to give them sense of belonging.
Further Speaking at the occasion were representatives of the Apero Mekunu Movement who emphasized that good governance and good living must not be seen as privileges for a selected few, but as rights for every Nigerian, regardless of physical ability.
“A fair system must be inclusive,” a speaker declared. “We need leaders who think beyond the majority, leaders who remember those in wheelchairs, those with hearing and visual impairments, those who are constantly left behind.”
They further Highlighted how physical barriers, policy gaps, and social neglect continue to exclude persons living with disabilities from benefiting fully from education, healthcare, infrastructure, and economic opportunities.
The Movement stressed that true representation is not about numbers, it is about impact. It means having voices in leadership that understand and prioritize the needs of marginalized communities, ensuring that development is not only widespread but also equitable.
“Until every citizen abled or disabled has access to basic rights and equal opportunity, we cannot call ourselves a just society,” one of the facilitators concluded.
The Apero Mekunu Movement, known for its grassroots activism and pro poor advocacy, called on political leaders, policymakers, and civil society to adopt a people first approach that includes those living with disabilities in planning, decision-making, and implementation processes.
