Persistent offensive smell noticed around benjamin area of eleyele

A persistent offensive smell has recently been noticed around the Benjamin area of Eleyele, Ibadan, raising questions about its source and possible environmental implications.
The odour, which can be perceived in parts of the area, has become noticeable enough to attract the attention of passersby as well as those driving .
Despite its presence, there has been little public discussion about the issue, and no official statement has been made regarding its cause.
Although some residents suggest the smell may be coming from the area where Hausa vegetable sellers operate beside the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) office.

Sources who spoke anonymously explained that the location of the vegetable sellers is dirty and yet they keep all their wastes in there and this could be the cause of the smell.
However, this remains speculation, as no investigation has been carried out to determine the actual source of the odour.
Another resident said “environmental issues such as persistent foul smells should not be ignored, especially in busy residential and commercial areas”.
In many cases, such odours can be linked to poor waste management, decomposing organic materials, blocked drainage systems, or other sanitation-related concerns.
There is currently fear from residents that the smell can pose a health risk annd ans such they are calling on the state Government to investigate early rather than waiting until they become more serious problems.
This situation presents an opportunity for the relevant authorities, including environmental health officials and sanitation agencies, to carry out routine inspections and assessments of the area.
Such proactive measures would help identify the source of the smell and reassure members of the public.
As Ibadan continues to grow, maintaining clean and healthy communities should remain a priority. Environmental concerns, no matter how small they may initially appear, deserve attention before they develop into larger challenges.
The Oyo State Government and relevant environmental agencies may therefore need to look into the matter and provide clarity on the source of the odour.
Efforts were made to speak with the Commissioner for Environment, but he was unavailable.
A simple investigation could help address concerns, improve sanitation where necessary, and ensure that the Benjamin area of Eleyele remains a safe and pleasant environment for residents, traders, and visitors alike.
