UI Law student missing after Imo conference, Students’ Union debunks claims of 8 students missing

Concern has continued to mount within the University of Ibadan (UI) community following the disappearance of a 300-level Law student, Tomisin, after attending a Scripture Union conference in Imo State.

The University of Ibadan Students’ Union Government (SUG) confirmed the development on Friday, while urging students and members of the public to remain calm as efforts are intensified to locate the missing student.

In a statement signed by the SUG President, Comrade Temidayo Adeboye, Tomisin was part of a delegation that travelled for a religious retreat alongside the National General Director of the Scripture Union Student Fellowship, Engr. Uwem Cosmos, and eight other participants.

The missing student serves as the National Secretary of the Scripture Union Student Fellowship, Nigeria, and Vice-President of the fellowship’s University of Ibadan chapter.

The Students’ Union also dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming that eight UI students were missing, clarifying that only one student of the institution, Tomisin, is currently unaccounted for.

According to the union, engagements have commenced with relevant religious bodies and security agencies to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and facilitate prompt intervention.

Sources said communication with Tomisin was lost while she was returning from the Scripture Union National Conference held at the Camp of Faith, Okigwe, Imo State.

Anxiety over her whereabouts heightened after she failed to participate in her faculty examinations scheduled for Monday and Tuesday.

It was further gathered that another University of Ibadan student from the Department of Music who attended the conference returned safely. However, the vehicle conveying the National General Director of the fellowship, Engr. Cosmos, has also reportedly remained unaccounted for.

Reacting to the development, the Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Ademola Lewis, confirmed that the university was aware of the situation, although the institution was not officially notified before the trip.

He assured that efforts were ongoing to ensure the student’s safe return and cautioned against the spread of unverified information capable of creating unnecessary panic.

The incident has generated widespread concern among students, staff and other members of the university community, many of whom continue to express hope for Tomisin’s safe rescue and reunion with her family.
