FG declares two-day public holidays for Easter celebration

Federal government has declared Friday, April 3, and Monday, April 6, as public holidays to enable Christians across Nigeria observe this year’s Easter celebrations, one of the most significant events in the Christian calendar. The announcement was made by the minister of interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement issued on Wednesday, confirming that Good Friday and Easter Monday will be observed nationwide as official work-free days.

Congratulating Christians in Nigeria and across the diaspora, the minister called on citizens to reflect on the deeper meaning of Easter, describing the season as a time to embrace values that promote national harmony and social stability. He urged Nigerians to imbibe the virtues of sacrifice, forgiveness, tolerance, and love, noting that the life and teachings of Jesus Christ provide enduring lessons on peaceful coexistence and unity in a diverse society.

Tunji-Ojo further emphasised that Easter represents more than a religious commemoration, describing it as a moment for national reflection on shared values that can strengthen social cohesion and foster collective progress. He reiterated the federal government’s commitment to policies aimed at driving economic growth, national development, and inclusive prosperity, stressing that unity and cooperation remain critical to achieving long-term stability and prosperity for all Nigerians.
The minister wished Christians a peaceful and joyous Easter celebration, expressing hope that the season would inspire renewed commitment to nation-building and mutual respect among citizens.
