UI Inaugurates Sports Academy Committee, Tasks Members to Build Lasting Legacy

Congratulations have poured in for Prof. Adegbesan, the convener of the University of Ibadan Sport Academy (UISA), and members of the newly inaugurated committee, following a formal ceremony held on 31 March 2026.


In his address at the inauguration, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayode Adebowale, underscored the strategic importance of the committee’s assignment, describing it as pivotal to the university’s broader vision for sports development. He noted that the establishment of the academy marks a significant step toward repositioning the institution within the national sporting landscape.


“The committee is saddled with the responsibility of establishing an unmatched legacy,” he said. “This initiative is expected to place the Premier University at the forefront of building a sustainable and vibrant sports ecosystem among tertiary institutions in Nigeria.”

Professor Adebowale further emphasized that the academy should not only nurture athletic talent but also contribute meaningfully to youth development, institutional pride, and national sports advancement. He expressed confidence in the committee’s capacity to deliver on its mandate, citing the members’ diverse expertise and commitment to excellence.

The committee comprises Professor O.A. Okunola, Professor Yomi Ige, Dr. Olawumi Adisa, Dr. Ayodeji Babalola, and Coach Oluchi Ajilola. Also included are the Principal of the International School, Ibadan, and the Head of the Staff School, University of Ibadan.
Responding on behalf of the committee, Prof. Adegbesan expressed appreciation for the confidence reposed in them and assured the university management of their dedication to the task ahead. “We are honoured by this responsibility and fully committed to delivering a framework that will stand the test of time,” he said. “Our goal is to develop a model that will not only benefit this also serve as a benchmark for others across the country.”

Stakeholders have expressed optimism that the initiative will open new opportunities for students and strengthen the university’s reputation in sports and youth development.
The convener and members of the committee have been widely wished a successful and impactful tenure as they embark on this important assignment.
