Oyo Govt Debunks Viral Entertainment Tax Post, Labels It Fake and Mischievous

State warns residents against misinformation, says Governor Makinde’s administration has no plan to tax weddings, burials, or social events.

The Oyo State Government has distanced itself from a viral social media post alleging the introduction of an entertainment tax on social activities such as weddings, burials, and naming ceremonies.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, described the post as “fake and mischievous,” urging members of the public to disregard it in its entirety.
The Commissioner clarified that the purported announcement did not originate from any official government source, noting that all legitimate tax notices must bear the Oyo State Revenue Code and the signature of the Chairman of the Oyo State Internal Revenue Service (OYIRS).

“None of these conditions were fulfilled in the viral post,” Oyelade stated. “Equally important, any genuine government tax communication must carry the address of the Oyo State Internal Revenue Office — which was conspicuously missing in the mischievous document.”
He warned against the deliberate spread of false information aimed at discrediting the administration of Governor ‘Seyi Makinde, emphasizing that the state remains committed to transparency and responsible governance.
“The intention behind the post was clearly to malign the image of the government and mislead the public,” he added.
The Commissioner assured residents that the Makinde administration has not introduced any form of tax on social gatherings, reiterating that all official government policies and levies are always duly announced through verified channels.
