Oyo Waste Authority moves to enforce mandatory household bins in Ido
Oyo Waste Authority Begins Mobilisation in Ido Over Mandatory Household Bins
The Oyo State Waste Management Authority (OYOWMA) has engaged community leaders in Ido Local Government Area of the state ahead of the commencement of enforcement of mandatory household waste bins from September 1, 2026.
The engagement, held in collaboration with Smart Tees Concept, a consultant to the authority, brought together members of the Community Development Council (CDC) and other community leaders to sensitise them on the new waste management directive.
Under the directive, every household is expected to have a designated waste bin for proper storage and disposal of domestic waste.
Officials of OYOWMA and Smart Tees Concept explained that the initiative was aimed at improving environmental sanitation and ensuring proper waste disposal across communities in the local government.
They urged community leaders to support the policy by educating residents on the importance of owning and properly using waste bins.
However, the community leaders appealed to the authorities and the consultant to review the registration fee and waste management charges, saying the cost could be difficult for some residents to afford.
They particularly called for consideration for retirees and other less-privileged members of the communities, stressing that the success of the programme would depend largely on its affordability and accessibility.
Speaking at the meeting, the Deputy Director of Environmental Health, Ido Local Government, Mr J. A. Taiwo, called for unity and cooperation among stakeholders to ensure the success of the initiative.
Taiwo urged the community leaders to take ownership of the programme and help communicate its importance to residents.
Also speaking, the Local Government Secretary, Alhaji Gbadamosi Kamorudeen, who represented the Chairman, Hon. Sheriff Aderemi Adeojo, reaffirmed the council’s commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at improving sanitation and environmental conditions in Ido.
The CDC Chairman, Engr. Tunde Salaudeen, in his remarks, urged residents to cooperate with the authorities and obtain their household waste bins ahead of the September 1 enforcement date.
Salaudeen also called on community leaders to intensify sensitisation at the grassroots, noting that proper waste management was ultimately aimed at protecting the health and wellbeing of residents.
The meeting ended with a call for sustained collaboration among OYOWMA, Smart Tees Concept, Ido Local Government, the CDC, community leaders and residents towards achieving a cleaner and healthier environment.
Residents were consequently urged to obtain and maintain appropriate household waste bins and comply with the waste management regulations ahead of the commencement of enforcement on September 1, 2026.
