US threatens wider action over fraudulent visa applications

The United States Mission in Nigeria has warned visa applicants that submitting forged documents or misleading information could lead to consequences extending far beyond the rejection of a single application.

The mission issued the warning on Monday through its official X account as part of its #VisaWiseTravelSmart campaign, which educates applicants about US visa procedures and immigration rules.

It said consular officers alert relevant US government agencies whenever fraudulent documents are detected or information uncovered during an application suggests that an individual may pose a security threat.

According to the mission, the agencies coordinate to prevent criminals and other potential threats from entering the United States.

The warning covers fake bank statements, employment letters, educational records, travel histories and other documents submitted to establish an applicant’s financial capacity, employment, qualifications or reason for travelling.

Information discovered during visa screening may also be shared with US law enforcement and security agencies where necessary.

The mission advised Nigerians applying for tourism, business, education or immigrant visas to provide truthful information and authentic documents throughout the process.

It cautioned that false declarations could damage an applicant’s prospects of obtaining a US visa in the future, even when the misinformation was supplied by an agent or consultant acting on the applicant’s behalf.
