Independent National Electoral Commission to Release Revised Timetable for 2027 Elections

Independent National Electoral Commission to Release Revised Timetable for 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced plans to issue a revised timetable for the 2027 general elections in compliance with the newly amended Electoral Act 2026.

The development follows growing public interest and political consultations surrounding the previously released schedule for the polls.

Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser to the INEC Chairman, Mr. Adedayo Oketola, confirmed that the commission is currently reviewing its earlier timetable to ensure full alignment with the provisions of the amended law. He stressed that the electoral body remains committed to operating strictly within the legal framework guiding Nigeria’s electoral process.

According to him, the revision is part of INEC’s statutory responsibility to adjust its administrative procedures whenever there are changes to the Electoral Act.

“INEC will act in accordance with the law,” Oketola stated while responding to calls by some political parties and stakeholders demanding clarity on the election schedule.

Although he did not specify a date for the release of the updated timetable, he assured Nigerians that the commission would communicate the new schedule in due course.

INEC had earlier announced February 20, 2027, as the date for the presidential and National Assembly elections, with governorship and State Houses of Assembly polls scheduled for March 6, 2027.

However, the announcement generated debate among sections of the public, particularly some Muslim organisations, who noted that the proposed dates may coincide with the holy month of Ramadan. They argued that holding elections during the fasting period could affect voter turnout and participation, especially in predominantly Muslim communities.

The Electoral Act 2026, recently amended by the National Assembly, introduced adjustments affecting timelines for primaries, submission of candidates’ lists, and other pre-election activities. The law also reinforces the requirement for INEC to publish notices of elections and schedules within clearly defined statutory periods.

Observers say the revised timetable will be crucial not only for political parties preparing for primaries but also for civil society groups, election observers, and security agencies coordinating early planning for the 2027 polls.

Commitment to Legal Compli

INEC’s decision to review the timetable underscores its constitutional mandate under the 1999 Constitution (as amended) to organise, undertake and supervise elections in Nigeria while adhering strictly to statutory guidelines.

With less than a year before major pre-election activities commence, stakeholders are expected to closely monitor the commission’s next move, as clarity on timelines will shape political strategies and campaign preparations nationwide.

The anticipated revised schedule is expected to address both legal adjustments under the amended Act and concerns raised by religious and civic groups, reinforcing confidence in the electoral process ahead of 2027.
