Oyo Commissioner Olatubosun Commended for Transforming Culture and Tourism Sector

The Oyo State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Hon. Dr. Wasiu Ajani Adewale Olatubosun, has been commended for his exceptional leadership and contributions to the growth of the state’s cultural and tourism sectors.

Since his appointment, Dr. Olatubosun has played a pivotal role in repositioning Oyo State as a major cultural and tourism destination in Nigeria. Through strategic initiatives and event-based tourism, the commissioner has helped increase local and international interest in Oyo’s rich heritage.

One of the key highlights of his tenure is the successful organization of major traditional coronation ceremonies, including those of the Alaafin of Oyo, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, the Soun of Ogbomoso, and the Onikanna of Iganna. These ceremonies, which were organized with cultural precision and administrative efficiency, have been widely praised for preserving tradition while attracting national attention.

In addition to royal events, Dr. Olatubosun has championed the promotion of cultural festivals such as the Sango Festival, Egungun Festival, and Oya Festival. These events have drawn significant crowds, including tourists from within and outside Nigeria, contributing to the state’s tourism revenue.

Recent government data revealed that Oyo State now records over 18,000 visitors daily, a significant increase from previous years. The number of hospitality businesses in the state has also risen to more than 12,000, reflecting a growing tourism-driven economy.

Speaking on the ministry’s progress, Dr. Olatubosun attributed the achievements to the support of Governor Seyi Makinde, as well as collaborative efforts between the ministry, traditional institutions, and the private sector. He emphasized the government’s ongoing commitment to positioning Oyo as a global cultural destination.

The commissioner also highlighted ongoing collaborations with international organizations such as UNESCO to further promote the state’s heritage and festivals. He disclosed that plans are underway to elevate the Sango Festival and other indigenous celebrations to meet global standards.

Dr. Olatubosun is also overseeing preparations for the second edition of the International Tourism Summit (ITSOyoState 2025), which aims to attract investment and partnerships across the tourism value chain.

Observers have described the commissioner as a grassroots mobilizer and effective administrator whose innovations have brought renewed attention to Oyo’s cultural wealth.
