Ensuring Peaceful and Fair Elections: Security Measures for Ibadan North Federal Constituency By-Election

The Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) and the Oyo State Police Command have put forth comprehensive security measures to guarantee a peaceful, free, and fair Ibadan North Federal Constituency By-Election scheduled for Saturday, August 16, 2025. These measures aim to maintain order and security during the electoral process following the passing of Hon. Olaide Aderemi, the former representative of the constituency in the House of Representatives.

The upcoming by-election in Ibadan North Federal Constituency holds significant importance, and the collaboration of various stakeholders is vital to ensuring a successful and violence-free electoral exercise. Stringent measures have been introduced to enforce electoral laws and uphold the principles of democracy.

In a recent announcement at the police headquarters in Eleyele, Commissioner of Police, Femi Haruna, emphasized the critical nature of the election and highlighted the importance of cooperation among stakeholders to uphold the rule of law. Haruna stressed the necessity of unity in discouraging electoral violence and ensuring a fair voting process.

Key security measures outlined by the authorities include a ban on quasi-security organizations, prohibition of campaign activities at polling units on election day, restrictions on alcohol consumption in and around polling centers, and the prohibition of armed escorts for candidates to maintain a neutral voting environment. Additionally, there is a strict ban on voter inducement, with offenders facing legal repercussions.

To further ensure a smooth electoral process, movement restrictions within Ibadan North and adjacent areas will be implemented from midnight until 5 p.m. on election day. Parents, guardians, and community leaders are urged to play a proactive role in preventing youth involvement in any form of electoral violence, with a stern warning of legal consequences for those found in violation of the law.

In case of emergencies, residents are advised to contact the Oyo State Call Response Center at 615 or reach out to the Police Command Control Room through designated helplines. These emergency contacts will provide swift assistance and support during the electoral process.

Dr. Adeniran Tella, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Oyo State, reassured the public of INEC’s preparedness for the upcoming by-election, calling on candidates and their supporters to demonstrate maturity, decorum, and sportsmanship throughout the electoral process. The electoral body is committed to ensuring a transparent and credible election, and compliance with established guidelines is crucial for a successful outcome.

With the combined efforts of ICCES, the Oyo State Police Command, and other stakeholders, the security measures in place aim to create a conducive environment for a peaceful, free, and fair Ibadan North Federal Constituency By-Election. By upholding the Peace Accord and adhering to electoral laws, all parties involved can contribute to a successful electoral exercise that reflects the will of the people.
