2027: BASA Declares for Senate, Gains Wide Support in Oyo PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State displayed a strong sense of unity on Saturday as top party leaders and stakeholders gathered to support Hon. Bolanle Aliyu Sarumi, popularly known as BASA, following her official declaration to contest the Oyo South Senatorial seat in the 2027 general election.

The declaration, held at her campaign office, drew a large crowd of party faithful, including all PDP Local Government Chairmen from Oyo South, members of the State Executive Committee, and party leaders from across the 33 local government areas of the state.

The wide turnout is being seen by political observers as a sign of growing unity within the party and early alignment ahead of the 2027 elections.

Speaking on behalf of the Oyo State PDP Chairman, Prof. Abdulraham Akinoso, the Oyo State PDP Youth Leader, Hon. Akeem Adeleke, congratulated Sarumi for taking what he described as a timely and important step. He assured party members that the PDP is well-positioned to win elections at all levels in 2027 and advised all members to go out and complete their PDP party registration as preparations intensify.

Leaders at the local government level also showed strong support for Sarumi’s ambition. The PDP Chairman of Ibadan North Local Government, Mr. Owolabi Olufemi, praised her commitment and loyalty to the party, describing her as a dedicated member. In the same vein, the PDP Chairman of Ibarapa East Local Government, Alhaji Salami Akeem, commended her contributions and expressed confidence in her chances.

Support for her candidacy also came from key groups within the party. The PDP Women Leader in Oyo State, Alhaja Latifa Lateef, described Sarumi’s decision to contest as bold and encouraging, urging women across the state to support her. She noted that BASA has the capacity to represent women effectively.

In her address, Sarumi thanked party leaders and supporters for standing by her. She promised not to disappoint them if given the opportunity to represent Oyo South in the Senate. She further pledged to set up empowerment committees across the nine local governments in Oyo South Senatorial District to drive job creation and youth empowerment at the grassroots. She also stressed the importance of unity and discipline within the party, urging members to follow laid-down rules as preparations for the 2027 elections continue.

The State Executive members present were Oyo Central Senatorial Chairman Hon. Adewusi Adegbola, Oyo South Senatorial Chairman Chief Biliaminu Muraina, State Financial Secretary Hon. Olatinwo Adekunle, State Ex-Officio Hon. Odeyemi Kabiru, Assistant State Women Leader Hon. Folashade Alao, and State Assistant Secretary Hon. Adio Tolani.

The event ended with party leaders expressing confidence in Sarumi’s candidacy and calling for continued unity within the PDP as the race toward 2027 begins to gather momentum.
